Friends are a curious thing. You find one and you decide “Yes, I want them to help me ruin my life.” But of course, you don’t just get to CHOOSE who your friend will be, no. Befriending someone is a mutual process that just clicks at some point. And sometimes, even if you think of them as a friend, they might not even be your friend. Not to mention, friends will betray you. Stab your back. Turn you a blind eye. Leave you. Hurt you. Abandon you. Leave you for dead. You can’t trust them. You can’t trust any of them. They’ll all betray you. Like everyone else ever has. You’re not safe. You’ve got to get out.

Get out.

GET OUT.

Chapter Eight: Melodies

Nick groaned as he finally felt himself waking up. For several minutes, he just laid in bed, cursing at the world and wanting to go back to sleep, but then finally sat up. Looking around, there were a few other beds in the room he slept in. Given everyone was staying here, a few people had returned home and collected their gatherings from their rooms back home. Those that could, anyways, since many people’s homes disappeared when they were randomly relocated. Nick didn’t, knowing he’d just have to redecorate his room when he got home.

Begrudgingly, he was sharing his room with Kent, Orange, and Poppy, the members of the team that he REALLY didn’t care for. Kent was a narcissistic prick, raving about how great his dad was. He was pretty much blind to the fact that everyone’s parents here was great and heroic. And did Kent’s dad really even do that much? All Kent said is that his dad was a racer. Gee, how ‘great’. Orange was an air-head and a moron. He had no idea what was going on around him and acted like nothing was wrong. If he was any dumber, he’d be Lemmy. And Poppy was all stuck-up and snobbish. He could at least be a bit more laid back like his cousin Apple.

But not as laid back, because Apple acts pretty much just like Orange. At least she takes charge, though. Apple seems to be pretty capable as a leader, but still, she can get annoying. And is she girly or not? She acts all happy-go-lucky and wears some weird gravity-defying skirt overalls, yet refuses to wear a dress? Sheesh. And going on about the others, Mira is just as bad as Poppy, acting so tough and all, but at least she can realize when someone is being obnoxious, so points to her. Although, Pratl is an annoying little bug. I don’t know why anyone, especially Mira, would want him around, so there’s a mark down for both of them.

Lemmy and Gutsy Kong are both total pains, immature, and annoying. Samantha is too quiet. She’s definitely hiding something. It’s always the quiet ones. Marcus seems okay. Very take charge and responsible. Not really any flaws that Nick could see. Of course, like Samantha, he’s probably hiding something, too. No one can be that good. He didn’t know Turquoise or Whoashi enough, yet, but they were girls, so definitely obnoxious.

So, yeah. Nick pretty much hated everyone here.

He sighed as he climbed out of bed, wearing his pajamas that he had stored in his backpack, in case he ever would suddenly be forced to go traveling. Like right now. Looking around, he saw Kent, Orange, and Poppy were already gone, so he guessed he probably slept in. He didn’t care and just headed out of the room, going downstairs into another room where Mario Jr., Link Jr., Game & Watch Jr., William, and Henry were all staying. Mario Jr. and Link Jr. were still asleep, but the latter three seemed to be up already. He didn’t really care, though. They were all weird. Even Will. But he was the one that Nick hated the least.

“…to scout around a bit, so Mira can head with her.”

“Hey, why do they get to go? Maybe I’d like to head there, too.”

“You’ll just get in the way. I’m working to map out everywhere so we can be prepared.”

“Oh, you’re the map-maker of the group, big whoop. I beat up a robot with a punch.”

“Which apparently you didn’t even manage to beat completely as it came back and attacked us hours later.”

“Shut up, Samantha…”

“Fine, if you wanna get lost, fine by me. You can come with us, but we’re not keeping our eye on you.”

“Hey, think I can go with you as well? It my home town you guys are heading to first, and I was hoping I could pick up somethings while I’m there since I was way too exhausted last night to do so.”

“Sure, that’s fine with me. You’re not as annoying as Kent, anyways.”

“Hey!!”

Nick groaned at all the senseless arguing going on among the team. “Good morning, Nick,” Apple smiled cheerfully.

“Is it?” Nick snapped, stuffing his hands into his pajama pants.

“…is it what?”

“Is it a good morning?”

“Uhh…” Apple blinked, scratching the back of her head. “…yes?”

“Ugh,” Nick rolled his eyes. “So, you four are gonna head off soon?”

Samantha nodded, “I’m heading to the G.F.S. Olympus, connected through Pallet Town, to look around, see if there are any more lost kids.”

“Alright, you do that,” Nick shrugged. “I’m starving, so I’m going to go search some trash cans for hamburgers.” He walked past the group, leaving them a bit shocked and disturbed at this statement. “Not literally, idiots…”

Everything everyone did here just seemed to piss Nick off more and more. He just wanted this all to be over with sooner. Not to mention that weird kid Harmony who apparently has PSI like him but hails from an island he’d never heard of before, despite having had traveled every inch of the world once before. “Nick!” Oh, speak of the devil… Nick sighed as he turned to see Harmony approach him. “H-hi! Look, I know we didn’t get off on the right foot yesterday-.”

“Nope.”

“Sigh… I’m not trying to make you mad…” Harmony frowned. “I just want to be friends.”

“And I don’t,” Nick shot back. “I don’t want any of this. I just want to be home. I don’t want another adventure.”

“Me neither…” sighed Harmony. “I nearly lost my whole family because of this big war…”

“…me, too,” Nick blinked. Maybe this kid wasn’t so bad after all. Anyone who had to go through the trouble of nearly losing family to war had to have been strong. “…Harmony, was it?” He knew his name was Harmony; he was just trying to warm up to him.

Harmony nodded, a smile starting to form. “Y-Yeah, Harmony. My sister’s name is Melody and my baby brother’s name is Rhythm.”

“Harmony, Melody, and Rhythm?” Nick blinked. “…uh, right… Anyways, follow me. I wanna show you something.” Confused, Harmony followed Nick as he began walking towards the entrance.

“Nick!” The two turned to see William running up to them. “You’re going to leave the ranch while still in your PJs?”

“What does it matter?” Nick asked, looking down at himself.

“It’s just…weird,” William frowned. “Mom never even lets you out of the house in your PJs! Don’t just do it now that she’s not around!”

“Ugh, play the ‘mom’ card, will ya? Fine…” In a flash, Nick ran and disappeared. Minutes later, he reappeared, now wearing his casual red/black-striped shirt, brown shorts, socks and shoes.

“…wait, is your hair naturally like that?” Harmony suddenly asked.

A few minutes passed, and the three had reached Fived. “Welcome to Fived, a snowy mountain-side town in the country of Winters,” Nick said with a smirk.

“Why’re we here?” Harmony asked, looking around.

“This is my hometown. It’s not the best and it’s always freezing cold, even in the summer, but it’s home and I love it,” Nick said. “It’s where I began my first adventure."

"Really?" Harmony asked, growing curious.

A monster named Giygas had attacked ten years ago, only doing small things like mind-control. No one seemed to notice. Not until years later. Giygas fully unleashed his wrath in my time, causing mayhem and destruction… My parents were killed when I had been sent out to retrieve a package, so I teamed up with a girl that turned out to be an alien boy, my brother William here, and a circus clown named Poppy who I haven’t seen since that whole incident… We managed to stop Giygas long enough for Buzz, the alien, to take the stone back in time. He apparently had to take the form of a robot bee to go back in time as the body he had wasn’t stable for time travel. He use PSI to transfer his soul into the robot bee and traveled back through time, reverting history, and I found myself waking up in bed with all the memories of the adventure still in my mind."

"And mine!" William chipped in.

"Wow...sheesh, that all sounds real intense," Harmony blinked. "As for me, there'd been this war going between the Reborn Pig Mask Army and Espartos's army. There's a magical instrument that can supposedly create peace at the sound of its music, so I had-"

"NICK D. CUBE!!" A voice echoed around the three.

"What the hell?" Nick glared, glancing around quickly. "That sounds like...Larry!"

"Larry?" Harmony blinked, a bit upset his story had suddenly been interrupted.

"Larry Lou is a gang kingpin in our town, running a gang called the Urchins to rival the Sharks of faraway Onett, whom they've clashed with one too many times along our adventure. Since our adventure ended, I've been battling the Urchins in trying to rid our town of them, but he outsmarts me at every turn..."

"Indeed, I do," Larry stepped out before them, arms folded and grinning.

"His hair looks like a torpedo..." Harmony whispered to William.

"Welcome home, Nick, William. I see you have returned home, and with a new friend at that," Larry smiled towards Harmony.

Nick snarled, pulling out his plastic bat, "And just where have you been this last day? There was a whole invasion going on in town that my friends and I wiped out all by ourselves."

Larry just laughed at what Nick had said, whipping out his knife, to which Nick reacted by readying his bat, William by readying his ray gun, and Harmony his wooden club. Larry just chuckled at this as he flipped off the end of the hilt on his knife, revealing a button. "Aww, you all didn't think you'd be fighting me, did you?" He laughed, pressing on it. A massive, grey, human-shaped robot that towered even Larry jumped out from nowhere, crashing down in front of the trio and dashing forward. "Meet the Louminator Mk. III!" He laughed.

The robot dashed at the three. Without hesitation, William and Harmony jumped off to the side. Nick took it head on, holding up his bat up in defense as the Louminator charged at him. "PSI Shield!" He yelled, a blue shield encasing him. Louminator crash into him, then began pounding its arms into the shield. "PK Fire!!" In the one second Louminator had raised its arms, the shield disappeared and Nick thrusted his fist up, sending a burst of fire that exploded against the robot's chest and sent it flying back. He then hurried at the robot, leaping up and swinging his bat down, but the Louminator easily punched him to the side onto the sidewalk and stood up.

"Nick!" William cried out, hurrying to his side and helping him up.

"Refresh!" Harmony pointed a finger at Nick, healing him of the damage he'd taken. "PK Thunder!" Harmony launched a ball of electricity at Louminator, who leaned to the side and dodged the attack, then began to charge at him, Harmony tripping backwards in an attempt to flee. Nick, reacting fast, jumped up and swung his bat, striking the electric ball and sending it flying back at Louminator. It struck the robot, knocking him flat on his front. Nick ran forward, helping Harmony up to his feet. "Th-thanks..."

William sighed with relief, then his eyes widened as the Louminator struggled up to its feet. He pointed his ray gun and began shooting at the robot over and over, who turned and glared at William and charged. The youngest boy frantically shot at it over and over, the two older boys turning and too late to react.

"PK WAR!" A voice cried, and all four stopped to turn and watch as Melody came launching in with baby Rhythm strapped on her back, launching a powerful purple light at the Loouminator and sending it flying back, Melody landing on the ground with a sigh.

"Melody!!" Harmony laughed, running up and hugging both his younger siblings. "That was amazing~" Louminator stood up, sparks flying from its body.

"Heh, I saw you all had run off, so I decided to join you," she laughed, wiping her nose. "Five-on-one, now, and I got Rhythm's PSI flowing into me and making me more powerful, no way this dumb robot can take us on."

"Dumb robot?" Larry laughed.

"Oh, five-on-two," Melody blinked. "Didn't see Mr. Capone over there."

"I suppose you could say he's dumb, but he's far more than a robot," Larry smirked. "If anything, he's more of an...almighty idiot, if you will."

"And...what the hell is that supposed to mean?" Nick asked. "Am I supposed to get that reference? ...Harmony, Melody, I need you to do something..." He whispered to the two, devising a plan.

"I suppose not, but that doesn't matter. What does matter is that I shall make sure that you all meet your end at the hands of the most powerful being from within our own universe, one you, Nick, have already-"

"PK FLASH!" The three PSI adepts cried out in unison, launching a massive green flash at the Louminator and promptly exploding it, sending metal flying at the kids and kicking up dust from a crater having formed beneath. Even Larry got blasted away from the explosion.

"Shield!"

"Shield!"

"PSI Shield!" The three worked together to create shields that engulfed all the kids together. As the dust settled, Nick and William were paralyzed to the core. "N...no, no, no...."

"What's wrong, Nick? Aren't you...H...A...P...P...Y...to see me?" The monster before them was massive, a blood red color with same-colored horns jutting from his head and a scar over his left eye. He had one massive fist, the other a corrupted sword shape that was clearly his flesh and a part of his arm, though it stretched farther than his other hand rather than seeming to be his hand having been lost. He had heavy armor with several scratches, massive shoulder plating with spikes, a cape torn at the bottom, and a front cloth slightly torn.

"Nick, who is that?" Harmony asked.

"That's...that's Giygas... The monster that caused the death of my parents, that destroyed the world, that caused me to lose the first friend I ever made..." Nick tightened his fist, nearly snapping his trusty plastic bat in half as his breathing grew heavy.

"That's right," Giygas chuckled.

"But you shouldn't even exist right now! The Chosen Four stopped you!" Nick cried out.

"Ah, but you see, that's just it. I shouldn't. And yet..," he laughed, then gestured to himself, "...here I am."

"Then how did you come back?" Melody chipped in.

Giygas chuckled, folding his arms, "Now ain't that the question of the day? But does it matter much? Point is, I'm here. And I feel more powerful than ever..."

"PK Freeze!" Nick quickly shouted, launching a burst of cold magic at Giygas. He simply held his hand up and blocked it with one hand, the magic wading around his hand and dissipating.

"PK Thunder!"

"PK Fire!!"

Both Harmony and Melody launched their respective attacks at Giygas. He just laughed at this, yelling, "PK Rockin!!" A rain of colors launched at the five, each diving to the side as a massive explosion emitted where they stood.

"Geez, forgot how strong he was," Nick grunted.

"We need a plan," Melody frowned. "Harmony, you start using Shield and PSI Shield, play our White Mage and jump in with attacks like PK Peace when you need to." Harmony nodded and hurried to the side, hiding behind a building. "William, you seem like a fast hitter, Nick, you seem like a powerhouse. Focus on those aspects and go at him with whatever you have."

"GRAAAHH!!" Giygas roared, slamming his sword arm on the ground, splitting Melody and Rhythm away from William and Nick, Melody carrying Rhythm up the side of a building, before he turned and attacked at Nick and William, splitting them from one another. "I can never forgive what your family has done to me, Nick, William..." He snarled, slashing at Nick, striking him down. "Your great-grandfather stole from my people..." He slashed again, Nick trying to block with PK Freeze only for Giygas to slash through it. "Your father destroyed my army, then tortured me with the memories of Mary..." He slashed once more, only for Nick to block with his bat. "And you..." William jumped on Giygas's back, shooting at the back of his head repeatedly. Giygas smacked William aside with ease, turning to him with a low growl. "You both..." Nick leaped up and slammed his bat against Giygas's head, but it did little more than annoy him, Giygas grabbing the bat and throwing it into a window and breaking through it, Nick getting tossed forward a bit before smacking into the asphalt road. Giygas set a foot on his back, relieving him of the air in his lungs with his heavy iron boot. "You ruined my chances of finally getting my revenge again, after conquering your whole pathetic planet... Why do you even care, Nick?"

"Why would I?" Nick snarled, still trying to push himself up, to absolutely no avail.

"You are fueled by hate, I can tell. But that's the issue... You hate everyone. Your brother,  your friends, your team, Poppy... Everyone you meet annoys you beyond belief, only a very, very select few earning your trust. You are a cancerous alien... You infect everyone with your hate... You are like a rage rogue..." Nick didn't reply, just laying speechless with his head pressed firmly into the asphalt.

"I'm surprised you cloud yourself with the colors of red and black, blood and darkness, when I do believe green is more your color, much as that of your best buddy Pluto. You've been jealous of William since his birth, having been neglected by the child prodigy in the family who would grow up to be loved by even Uncle Loid, who never gave you the time of day... Everyone loves him more even now, as he's the sweetest little thing and you...aren't~ None of the Chosen  Four gave you much attention, neither before nor after my defeat. Heck, Ness's daughter is best friends with Will..." Nick had never been more terrified than he had been at that moment, knowing in his heart that Giygas was right with everything he was saying.

"Your signature PSI technique is even PK Death, represented by your favorite thing being the death of others. You are a boy fueled by darkness and hatred and mindless fury aimed at everyone. You do not belong on the side of good. Join me, join the Giygas army, and I can help bring you to your fullest potential." The entire time, William, Melody & Rhythm, and Harmony were working together, striking Giygas, but nothing they did fazed him. Finally, Giygas stepped off of Nick, letting him stand up. "The choice is yours..."

"I...I-I..." Nick shook to the core, looking down at his hands. "Everything you said is right... Every single thing you said...is right..." Nick looked up at Giygas, still looking terrified. "But...that's just it. That's why I have to be a hero. Because even through all that...there is still those I love..." He turned to William and gave a weak smile. "I may be jealous of him... I may act like I don't care... But he's my brother, and I'd give the world for him... Besides..." He turned up to Giygas, grinning cockily as tears swelled up in his eyes. "Being a villain is just way too played out. PK TORNEDO!!" In an instant, a green burst of wind shot forward and surrounded Giygas, shaking him around and shooting him upwards. "Gotta thank Pluto for that... PK DEATH!!!" Red and black magic spears formed and shot at Giygas as he was still flying upwards.

"PK Peace!" Harmony cried out, launching a bright green light upwards that surrounded and struck Giygas from all sides.

"PK War!!" Melody shouted, a purple light launching that struck Giygas like a fist.

"Grrr... You brats will pay for this insolence!!!" He snarled out as he began his plummet back down. "PK ROCK-"

"PK POP!!" A young girlish voice yelled, a barrage of magenta, pink, and white lights rapidly exploding around him.

Giygas crashed into the ground, snarling as he stood up holding his head. "Who...who dares...?"

"Melanie!!" William laughed, catching a young girl as she leaped off a roof top.

"Rrrrrr... The daughter of Ness..." Giygas snarled.

"Six-on-one, you're out-numbered," Melody chuckled.

"I've been in worse situations," Giygas huffed, trying to shrug it off. In a flash, he disappeared, reappearing behind Nick and grabbing him by his neck. "I'll just take you out one by one, starting with the worst of you."

"Nick, no!!" William cried out, running towards them before Giygas shot a PK Freeze at his feet.

"William, William, calm down, I'll be okay," Nick assured. "I'll be the hero. I have to. That's the role I'm supposed to take, given the plot going on here. I'll save us in the blink of an eye, watch. Melanie!"

"Yeah?" Melanie asked, using PK Fire to melt the ice encasing William's feet.

"Take good care of everyone here. They're all good kids... William especially, heh... Harmony, I want to apologize for the way...hrk...the way I treated you before, being so distrusting. It wasn't in my place, what with everything going on... You have two great siblings. Treat them better than I did mine, something you can't take back."

"N-Nick..." William whimpered, clinging to Melanie.

"Are you quite down with your sappy farewells?" Giygas huffed. "Holding you like this isn't too good for the body."

"I love you, bro..." Nick smiled. "PK DEATH! PK FAREWELL!!"

In a quick succession, a barrage of red and black spears struck both Giygas and Nick, then in a flash, they bit disappeared. Finally, William broke free and collapsed where the two stood previously. "N...Nick..." Tears flooded the poor boy's eyes, painting the ground with plain drops.

--

The five trudged back towards camp, Melanie holding William up along the way, patting his back. "It'll be okay, Will, I promise," she hushed him.

"I...I have to find him..." William whimpered, burying his face in his hands, tears and his hands smudging up the glasses.

"Will..." Melanie sighed. "What you need is rest. That battle took its toll on you all, you guys must be exhausted."

"I'll...I'll join the group... I'll team up with them. I'll...I'll help save Nick and daddy and mommy..."

--

"No, you won't," Poppy said simply, folding his arms as he stared this kids down. "We aren't going to be letting kids follow us around."

"We let Nick join us, and he was just ten," Apple pointed out.

"He was strong, more well-equipped. William here is sobbing up a storm, and we don't need a five year old rushing into battle with toy guns. Maybe someone irresponsible like Nick would let William fight with him, but you don't want Mario Jr. joining us, do you? You did just last night and he crashed an airplane. Besides, I think Nick would want us to keep William safe at this point."

"Fair enough..." Apple sighed.

"I'd certainly not take Melody or Rhythm back in with me," Harmony chuckled nervously. "In fact, I'm just going to relax and not get into any fights for a while."

"Same here," Melody nodded. "I may enjoy fighting and all, but even I have my limits, and seeing Nick go like that...just brings back bad memories."

"See? They're exhausted, too," Poppy said, insisting further.

"Actually, I'm perfectly fine," Melanie piped up. "I joined in just at the end, still full of power, and I feel raring to go as ever! Plus, my father was the leader of the Chosen Four, and I want to live up to his name. If joining you would help me with that, I'd really appreciate it."

Apple and Poppy frowned, looking at one another. "...we'll think about it," Poppy caved in. "Just go get something to eat and restore your health. You kids need it." As the cousins watched the kids all hurry off to the mess hall recently built, Poppy glanced at Apple. "You sure we should let any of them join? They're...kids, after all. Real kids. Not trained to be warriors like Lemmy, or equipped with an arsenal of monsters like Orange and Turquoise... Samantha, Marcus, Mira, you, and I are all trained to be warriors... Whoashi and Gutsy Kong have the experience... Kent had the strength and Nick had the strength, as well as the experience... I don't want them to be scarred anymore than they already have been now, especially after what they just went through after trying to go off on their own."

"I know, I know, you're right," Apple nodded. "And I really don't want to myself. But come on, we just lost our magic-using team member. He was really strong and well-equipped, too. We should at least pick one of those kids that have experience in magic. We might need it in the future. Let's at least consider it."

"If you say so," Poppy shrugged. "Anyways, go eat, I already did. I'm standing out guard waiting got Mira and the others to return."

"Mira and the others? Isn't it Samantha's team, technically?" Apple smirked, nudging his side.

"Stop saying I have a crush on her, you know I have a girlfriend," Poppy glared. "I respect her as a fellow talented and trained swordsperson. That's all."

"If you say so," Apple chuckled and shook her head. "Catch you later, cousin." She gave a hug around his waist and skipped back off into the town.

"Right, right," he smirked, turning off towards Pallet Town before seeing figures appear along the horizon.

--

"Oof!!" Nick was thrown into the ground, a strange purple substance. He struggled to his feet, panting and grunting. "Sheesh, someone's grumpy." Darkness surrounded them, the two lost in a strange void.

"You rotten brat! You ruined everything again!!" Giygas roasted, throwing a fist at Nick, who rolled out of the way as Giygas sucker punched the ground.

"Larry was right, you ARE an all-mighty idiot," Nick laughed.

"If I'm really an idiot, how'd I know about my death, Pluto, and everything about you?"

Nick's eyes widened at realization, feeling like the real idiot at the point. Before he could ask, Giygas slunk off into the darkness. "Hey, wait!" Nick gave chase, but for the strangest reason he's just vanished. "Grrr... All-mighty coward is more like it... Now, where the hell am I?"

Maybe not all friends are bad. Because when it comes down to it, you have to have faith in someone. Even the meanest of people can turn out unexpectedly nice and courageous in the end, as we just witnessed, who put faith in the others to take care of the one person he had left to love. And isn't that what we all need, a little bit of faith in others? We'd all be paranoid ants scrambling around, full of worry as our anthill collapses. Nick took that risk for his anthill, though. And hopefully, we shall continue to see faith like that as the search for not only the team's parents ensues, but also for Nick...and just whatever happened to Bowser Jr.?
